Dr William WilsonMBBS, FRACPInterventional Cardiologist and Accredited TAVI Practitioner
Dr Wilson is a cardiologist specialising in interventional cardiology, both coronary and structural and adult congenital heart disease. He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1999 and completed his advanced cardiology training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
He completed three cardiology fellowships in Melbourne, Edinburgh and Toronto respectively. He undertook two years of training in interventional cardiology and adult congenital heart disease at the Royal Melbourne Hospital prior to working overseas for four years.
The fellowship at the Edinburgh Heart Centre, Scotland focused on complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). There, he developed proficiency in:
- Radial access PCI
- Fractional flow reserve (FFR) and intracoronary imaging
- Complex PCI, including left main PCI and rotablation
- PCI for chronic total occlusions (CTO) using the ‘hybrid’ approach (including antegrade dissection re-entry and retrograde approaches).
He subsequently completed a two-year clinical and interventional fellowship in adult congenital heart disease at the Toronto Congenital Cardiac Centre for Adults. His training encompassed:
- Structural heart interventions (e.g. device closure of interatrial and ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, coarctation stenting, and left atrial appendage occlusion)
- Diagnostic catheterization and interventions in complex congenital heart disease patients
- Transcatheter valve procedures, including aortic and pulmonary valve replacements, balloon mitral valvuloplasty, and closure of paravalvular leaks
Dr Wilson is currently undertaking a PhD through the University of Melbourne, focusing on congenital heart disease, particularly outcomes in patients with a systemic right ventricle and mechanisms of ventricular failure. He also created and manages a multi-centre database in the United Kingdom for CTO PCI procedures.
In addition to his clinical and research commitments, Dr Wilson is actively engaged in medical education. He teaches medical students, junior doctors, and physician trainees, and coordinates the cardiology teaching program for the FRACP lecture series. He holds a public appointment as a consultant cardiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he also serves as the Director of Structural Heart Interventions.
